Letter: Investigation revolved around other topics besides sex

In their response to Kenneth Starr's report, the president and his lawyers said: " ... it is plain that "sex" is precisely what this 4 1/2-year investigation has boiled down to."

This is not true, because Starr's investigation has resulted in 12 convictions of people, which included Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker and the Clintons' business partners in Whitewater -- Jim McDougal, who died in prison, and Susan McDougal, who chose additional jail time rather than answer under oath questioning which could implicate the president and the first lady.

It would have been mainly about "sex" had not the president made matters worse with his finger-pointing denial to the public, cover-up that implicated people who believed and defended his lies, possible perjury charges, and the continuing "hair splitting" legal defense of the president and his lawyers -- which has prolonged the public's agony and added to the growing expenses of the investigation.

Also, even if Starr did not convict anybody, the purpose of the office of independent counsel is not only to convict but also to clear anybody when it is called for.
