* YARD SALE -- The Las Vegas Blind Center will have its fall fund-raising yard sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 1001 N. Bruce St. Toys, collectibles, jewelry and more will be on sale. For more information, call Catherine Law, 642-6000.

Getting results

* GOLF MARATHON -- Golfers at the Las Vegas Pauite Resort raised $86,788 for the Boy Scouts from the more than 650 contributors who sponsored the golfers for each hole of golf they played. Money earned from the golf marathon will benefit more than 25,000 scouting members of the Boulder Dam Area Council.

* CULTURE SHOCK -- Culture Shock Las Vegas held its second annual song and dance production, "Takin It To The Streets" recently at Palo Verde High School. The production, to benefit Culture Shock's Future Shock Youth Outreach Program, raised $8,000, to be used to help steer youths away from drugs, violence and hatred. The four-year-old organization uses street dance to reach out to young people.

* MUSEUM GRANTS -- The Lied Discovery Children's Museum, 833 N. Las Vegas Blvd. North, received a $112,500 federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington. The independent federal grant-making agency promotes leadership and learning by supporting museums and libraries. The grant will be used to provide support for museum operations and collection care.

* RYAN WHITE IV GRANT -- UMC was recently named a recipient of the Ryan White IV Grant to coordinate services and to provide enhanced access to research for children, youth, women and families. The hospital will receive $250,000 annually until 2001.

* CANCER AID & RESEARCH -- Gail Cihlar of Indian Springs, a member of North Las Vegas Memorial Auxiliary 10047, participated in the National Council of Administration meeting at the opening of the 85th National Convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States held recently at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Approximately 5,000 members attended the convention activities, which recognized those who have helped the organization raise more than $3 million for its Cancer Aid and Research Fund; serve 2.2 million hours in the nation's hospitals, and donate $7.5 million to assist non-hospitalized veterans through the Auxiliary's Rehabilitation Program.

* 1998-99 CAMPAIGN GOAL -- United Way of Southern Nevada recently announced its 1998-99 fund-raising campaign goal of $9,300,000, to help meet the needs of the growing population. So far its Pacesetter companies have raised $1,256,000.

* ARTS GRANT -- The Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada has received a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts through ArtsREACH, a new program to extend endowment support. The grant is to help organizations develop programs to educate the public, identify community needs, create arts facilities and encourage tourism.

Good sports

* BOY SCOUT INVITATIONAL -- The eighth annual Boy Scout Invitational Golf Tournament will be 11:30 a.m. Oct. 7 at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club, 5500 E. Flamingo Road. The tournament will follow a four-person scramble format, various competitions, prizes and a barbecue lunch. Entry fee is $375. Honors

* SENIOR FRIENDS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR -- Bob Girard, a three-year member and volunteer of the Las Vegas Sunrise Senior Friends chapter, was selected from applicants nationwide as the 1998 Senior Friends Volunteer of the Year. Girard volunteers weekly at the Sunrise Senior Friends reception desk, is volunteer president and conducts monthly volunteer meetings, writes for the Sunrise chapter newsletter and is a member of the community advisory board. He also serves as treasurer for Champions of Organ Sharing, which is affiliated with the Nevada Donor Network.

* ALUMNI AWARD -- Rhonda Montgomery, an associate professor in UNLV's tourism and convention department, has been named the September recipient of the Alumni Faculty Award for Excellence in Academics and Student Focus. She has authored or co-authored 15 refereed journal articles and five books and presented more than 40 conference papers Montgomery will be honored at the alumni leadership luncheon Nov. 3.

* THREE-YEAR CERTIFICATION -- Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada Inc., received its three-year Goodwill Industries International certification recently, allowing it to continue to provide training, employment and job placement services for people with disabilities and other special needs.

* AARP WORKSHOP -- Secretary of State Dean Heller has announced his support for the continuation of the American Association for Retired Person's Women's Financial Information Program in Las Vegas. This year's workshops will be from 8:30 a.m.- noon Oct. 10, 17 and 24, Nov. 7 and 14. at Cannon Senior Services Center, 340 N. 11th St. Participants must register by Oct. 5. The cost is $15. * BILINGUAL SERVICES -- Lighthouse Compassionate Care has designed a new program to assist Spanish-speaking individuals infected with HIV/AIDS. The new Bilingual Services Program includes translating brochures, applications and miscellaneous documents at local agencies into Spanish to help the clients access benefits or services they may be eligible for.

* BLUE MOON BALL -- The sixth annual Senior Blue Moon Ball will be 6:30-10 p.m. Thursday at the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza. For tickets, call 229-6602.

* FREE BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS -- The Mountain View Chapter of Senior Friends offers free blood press screenings. A nurse from Horizon Home Hospice will be available from 10-11 a.m. each Friday in October at 8524 Del Webb Blvd., in Summerlin.

* HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE -- Lewis Homes and Nextline have kicked off a food drive/personal care drive at six of its new home sites that will run through Nov. 15. All items will benefit the Salvation Army. For more information, call 99-SHARE. Party Land, 3129 N. Rainbow Blvd., is also having a food drive during October and anyone who donates canned or dry food items to benefit the Salvation Army, from 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 2 or 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 3, will receive Halloween treats and a chance to win a $50 Halloween party.
