Boulder City Hospital nurse of 20 years, Durkin dies

Dorothy C. Durkin, a longtime resident of Boulder City, died March 29 in Phoenix. She was 83.

Durkin was born in Akron, Ohio, and resided in Kent, Ohio, until 1957, when she and her late husband moved to Boulder City to be near her brother, longtime Las Vegas Sun chief photographer Ken Jones.

She took a job at the Boulder City Hospital as a licensed practical nurse, where she remained for more than 20 years. Her husband at the time worked both as an engineer and ambulance driver for the hospital. Since it was the only ambulance in Boulder City, they would often go out on calls together.

After retirement, Durkin was active in many senior citizens clubs and traveled extensively.

Durkin is remembered by her family as one who had "the sweetest heart in the world."

Besides Jones, she is survived by one son, Robert Stratton of Kent, Ohio; one daughter, Patricia Beery of Phoenix; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Boulder City. Burial will follow in Boulder City Cemetery.
