Airline sets schedule to LV

Sun Country Airlines will offer 23 flights a week between McCarran International Airport and Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Detroit.

Beginning June 1, Sun Country will offer daily departures to Las Vegas from Milwaukee at 9 a.m., Detroit at 10 a.m. and from Minneapolis at 8:20 p.m. On Sundays and Thursdays, the airline will have additional flights from Minneapolis leaving at 8:15 a.m.

Mendota Heights, Minn.-based Sun Country presently offers charter service to about 20 cities, including Las Vegas, with a fleet of four DC-10 jumbo jets and 11 Boeing 727s. A spokeswoman for the company said the size of the plane to be used on the scheduled service will be based on bookings.

Sun Country will compete directly with Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines and America West Airlines on the Minneapolis and Detroit flights. A Detroit-based discount carrier, ProAir, had announced plans to offer twice-a-week flights between Detroit and Las Vegas in December, but those plans were put on hold, a spokeswoman for the company said. There is no indication when flights might start.

Sun Country's competitors on the Milwaukee route will be America West and Midwest Express.

A vacation packaging company affiliated with Sun Country, Funjet Vacations, also announced that it plans to market the new flights.

The company plans a frequent-flier program when scheduled service begins.
