Assembly passes bill on children in pickups

Police wouldn't be able to cite drivers with children riding in the back of trucks unless they first were charged with another offense, such as speeding. Drivers charged with violating AB157 could be fined $25.

Assemblywoman Ellen Koivisto, D-Las Vegas, said pickups used in agriculture work or those being driven in rural areas would be exempt. She added rules that would apply to camper shells.

That produced the ire of Assemblyman Don Gustavson, R-Reno. He said tourists to Nevada regularly might have their children sleeping in a camper shell.

Assemblyman Bernie Anderson, D-Sparks, responded by saying disastrous accidents involving children in camper shells have occurred.

Bills dealing with riding in the back of pickups have failed to pass previous legislatures. The bill approved Monday must go to the Senate.
