With downtown parking in Las Vegas an even tougher proposition now that a metered lot at Fourth Street and Stewart Avenue is under renovation, the City Council on Monday approved two contracts for a new parking garage across the street from City Hall.

The Stewart Avenue Parking Garage will be built on the site of a current metered lot.

The garage will have 30,000 square feet of first-floor office space under five stories of parking. Plans also call for a walkway to be constructed over Stewart Avenue to City Hall.

On Monday, the council approved a $920,000 contract with KGA Architecture for design of the garage and a $605,000 contract with Kitchell Contractors Inc. for construction management and bid reviews.

When the garage is completed next year, city employees will park there, and the public will be able to park in what is currently the City Hall garage.

City swaps land near Floyd Lamb

The City Council approved an agreement Monday with the state to essentially trade 240 acres it can't use for 320 acres planned for a regional park.

The agreement among the city, state and Bureau of Land Management allows the city to lease 320 acres of BLM land just east of Floyd Lamb State Park near Jones Boulevard.

In return, the city will surrender to the state its leasing rights on 240 acres at the park's south side, an area at the end of Durango Drive that forms the state park's entrance.

The city's lease stated it could only develop a zoo or botanical gardens on the 240 acres -- with all improvements and assets reverting to the state.

Council OKs design for sports complex

Youth soccer players got one kick closer to a new regional complex Monday when the City Council approved a design contract for the project.

Cella Barr Associates Inc. will be paid $285,490 to design the regional soccer complex on 65 acres at Lake Mead Boulevard and Tenaya Way.

The complex is planned to include 10 lighted soccer fields, one baseball field with a backstop, a restroom facility and open park space with a playground.
