Huge slide blocks Douglas-Tahoe link

The road was not expected to reopen before Wednesday afternoon. In addition to the massive cleanup, the Nevada Department of Transportation is carefully inspecting the area to make sure another slippage is not imminent, according to supervisor Dan Lopez.

There were no reports of any injuries in the slide, which occurred in an uninhabited area. The Douglas County sheriff's office estimated its size at about 30 feet high and 60 feet wide.

The slide occurred about one mile up from the valley floor when ice, rocks and boulders let go about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Sheriff's spokesman Lance Modispacher said it was not known how long it would take to clear the mess. South shore casinos were asked to advise their customers and employees not to try to take Kingsbury Grade home.

U.S. 50 also links the lake with the valley via Spooner Summit, although not as directly.
