Senate approves measure to create own proposed state budget

Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, said SB71, now going to the Assembly, wouldn't diminish the role of the governor. But he added it would give legislators an option other than just working from the executive budget.

Sen. Joe Neal, D-North Las Vegas, agreed with Raggio, adding that the bill would help develop a better state spending plan and is a "good addition to the budget process."

SB71 allocates $60,000 for a computer program to allow for a side-by-side comparision of the executive and legislative budgets.

Voting against the bill were Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, and Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas.
