Services set for Aladdin worker

Construction has resumed on the new Aladdin hotel-casino following the death of Stephen Abernethy.

Abernethy, 39, a journeyman ironworker, was killed when five 10,000-pound concrete floor panels crashed through several floors of the hotel's south tower Sunday morning, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Steve La-Sky said.

Services for Abernethy will be 10 a.m. Friday at McDougal Funeral Home in Salt Lake City, followed by burial in Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Meanwhile, the Nevada office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration continued its investigation today.

OSHA District Supervisor Jimmy Garrett said there had been no complaints filed by workers regarding unsafe work conditions before the collapse.

He said that while a comprehensive inspection was conducted at the worksite on Feb. 22, he was not at liberty to release the results nor would he confirm whether any citations were issued.

Fluor Corp., parent company of Fluor Daniel, the project's general contractor, said in a news release that the February OSHA inspection "found no violations."

Abernethy is survived by his fiancee, Bonnie Fuller; two daughters, Felicia and Monica Abernethy; two grandchildren, Veronica Lopez Abernethy and Carlos Antonio Steven Abernethy; seven brothers, Dennis, Randy, Terry, Mike, Kevin, Jeff and Fred Abernethy; and three sisters, Barbara, Doylene and Sherri.
