West Virginia U. dean to head Nevada journalism school

William Slater, who's currently dean of the Perly Isaac School of Journalism school at West Virginia University, will take over the new position July 1.

His appointment on Monday ends a two-year search that began when former dean Jimmy Gentry left in May 1997 to become dean of the school of journalism at the University of Kansas.

Slater worked in print and broadcast journalism from 1959 to 1977 in Boston, Washington, Cleveland, Seattle, San Francisco and Baltimore.

He was radio and television news anchor for WBZ radio and television in Boston and covered the White House and Congress for WBZ's parent Westinghouse Broadcasting Co.

Slater began his teaching career in 1977 as an assistant professor of communications at the University of Washington.

He was a visiting professor at the University of Southern California before being appointed head of the radio-television program at the University of Arizona in 1978.

From there, he moved to Eastern Washington University as dean of the college of fine arts and to Western Illinois University as vice president of institutional advancement. He joined West Virginia University in 1994.
