Police release officer's ID in fatal shooting of man

A Metro Police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a man Monday has been identified by the police department as Bruce Gentner.

Gentner, 27, a four-year veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an inquest by the Clark County coroner's office, according to Metro spokesman Steve Meriwether.

Investigators say Gentner shot and killed 32-year-old John Perrin late Monday after Perrin was stopped because he was acting suspiciously.

Perrin, according to police, reached for an object in his waistband and Gentner shot him five times.

Deputy Chief Kyle Edwards said the incident began around 11:30 p.m. Monday when the patrol officer saw a man running east across Rainbow Boulevard near a drainage canal south of Tropicana Avenue.

The officer stopped the man, who acted nervous and reached for a dark object, Edwards said.

A small, dark, glass jar with a metallic lid containing a substance used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, however, was found near the victim's body, as was a plastic-wrapped bundle that could have contained a drug, police said.
