UNLV halts softball skid

UNLV split games in a nonconference softball doubleheader against Long Beach State at Rebel Diamond Wednesday, losing 3-0 in the opener before rebounding to take the second game 4-2. The Rebels are now 14-24 overall and will return to conference action Saturday and Sunday against Tulsa.

Wednesday's first game was a pitcher's duel through five innings until the 49ers finally got on the board in their half of the sixth. The Rebels could not answer, then gave up two insurance runs in the seventh inning on three 49er hits.

Geney Orris picked up the loss for UNLV to bring her record to 5-12 on the season.

The Rebels rebounded in the nightcap and broke their 10-game losing streak. Racheal Goodpaster belted her 11th home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning. She finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Her other hit was a double that came in a third inning when the Rebels jumped to a 3-0 lead. Cassi Dysert led off the inning with a triple and two 49er errors also aided the Rebel cause.

Down 4-0 in the seventh inning, Long Beach State rallied by scoring two runs with two outs. But it was not enough as UNLV pitcher Nicole Truax closed out the inning for the complete game and her third win of the season.
