LV air traffic continues to grow

Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport continued to climb in March as nearly 3 million people used the Las Vegas facility.

The 8.5 percent increase in passengers over March 1998 brought the total to 8 million for the quarter, an 8.3 percent increase over the same three months last year. It was the sixth straight month of increases.

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines showed the biggest increases for the month, with passenger counts jumping 11.1 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively, for the No. 4 and No. 3 carriers at the airport. Southwest Airlines, the No. 1 carrier in Las Vegas, reported a 10.1 percent increase to 792,287 passengers for the month.

Despite the threat of a strike in March, America West Airlines reported a decrease of just 0.3 percent for the period.

For the quarter, United had the biggest increase with 13.6 percent more passengers. Southwest was up 10 percent and Delta, 8.5 percent. Reno Air had a 9.1 percent decline for the quarter while America West was down 2 percent.
