About two dozen firefighters responded to the fire Saturday afternoon at the TRW Automotive plant five miles in the hills above Lockwood.
Nevada Division of Forestry spokesman Steve Frady said the fire was confined to a bunker containing an experimental explosive material. No major damage was reported.
"We allowed it to burn and did not go in," Frady said. "We were ready for the potential of an explosion or toxic smoke."
The plant, which employs about 20 people, is developing a new car airbag propellant.
