Roban bound for Aztecs

Well, so much for Jim Roban coming home to finish his collegiate basketball career.

The former Bishop Gorman star will not visit UNLV after all and is expected to sign a national letter of intent to play for Mountain West Conference rival San Diego State.

Roban, a 6-foot-6 forward, played at Dixie College in nearby St. George, Utah, after transferring from Montana. He was going to visit UNLV Wednesday after taking a visit to San Diego State earlier in the week.

But Roban never made it back to Las Vegas. Sources in San Diego Thursday said he was set to become new Aztecs coach Steve Fisher's first signee.

Roban averaged nearly 14 points at Dixie.

The Rebels had gotten involved very late in the recruiting process and the lure of coming home and playing in the Thomas & Mack Center apparently wasn't enough to convince Roban to alter Thursday's decision.

Roban didn't return repeated calls to his St. George apartment.

While Roban will play against UNLV, the Rebels are hoping Wayland White and Marlon Parmer will decide to call Las Vegas home. White, a 6-6 forward from Iowa Western Community College, and Parmer, a point guard from Verbum Dei High in Los Angeles, are visiting this weekend.

White is considering Baylor, New Mexico and Pittsburgh along with UNLV. Parmer, if he signs, would join teammate Dalron Johnson as members of UNLV's 1999 recruiting class. The 6-8 Johnson signed with UNLV in November.
