Christopher Starling of Los Angeles was booked Thursday into the Washoe County Jail on one count of intentional transmission of HIV.
The suspect is a student at the Sierra Job Corps in Stead.
University of Nevada, Reno police, who made the arrest, would not release any information about the victim, saying only that she was of legal age.
Starling had a consensual relationship with her, police said.
"One basis of this charge is the person has to know he has HIV, withhold that information from the other person and engage in unprotected sex," said Mike Meese, acting UNR police chief.
Police do not think Starling had contact with more than one person, Meese added.
