April storm hits western Nevada, Sierra

A lot of thoughts likely were going through motorists' minds as they chained up today on Interstate-80, but the idea that May 1 is just four days away probably wasn't one of them.

A storm that dropped snow on the Reno area as well as the Sierra brought out chain or snow tires requirements over Donner Summit, where up to 4 inches of snow fell after daybreak.

Snow also fell in the Reno area, but with temperatures hovering just above freezing, any accumulation was on roofs and lawns, but not on streets. Forecasters were calling for up to 3 inches today in the foothills, accompanied by brisk northerly winds that would make the cool temperatures seem even chillier.

A chance of snow showers was to continue into tonight with lows in the upper 20s and low 30s likely to nip any spring blooms that escaped today's freeze.

Gradually warming temperatures and decreasing showers were forecast for Thursday and Friday with partly cloudy skies and readings back in the 60s in the outlook for Saturday and Sunday.
