Columnist Peter Benton: Volunteers, sponsors sought for girls' event

The Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association is hosting this year's Girls Americas Cup, scheduled for July 26-29 at the Stallion Mountain Country Club.

Fifteen four-girl teams from the Western U.S. along with three Alberta and British Columbia in Canada will be competing.

The SNJGA is calling on the public and the business sector to assist in making this event a memorable one.

A $500 team sponsorship will put your name or your business name in the program, plus you'll receive two tickets to the banquet where you will meet and be seated with the team that you sponsored.

Another option is assisting with the housing of these young players. Accommodations are required from Sunday, July 25, through Thursday, July 29.

Donations of snacks and beverages during the tournament days would be appreciated, as would the donation of any items that may be included with tee gifts. (Ninety would be required for both teams and captains).

As we only host this tournament once every 18 years, every effort is being made to ensure its success. So if you can assist in any way, please call the SNJGA office at 433-0626, ext. 4.

* LONDON BRIDGE CLUB: The Nevada State Seniors Golf Club's recent three-day tournament at the London Bridge Golf Club in Lake Havasu was a huge success blessed with lovely weather.

Winning low gross in the first flight with a score of 293 was the Joe Stanley-Brad Fields pairing while low net honors went to Joe Malais and Pat Lynch at 256.6.

Bob Lee and Paul Doner won low-gross honors in the second flight, coming in at 217. Low net went to Jim Kelly and Wally Carson. Their score was 260.1.

Chuck Larson and C.P. Taylor were victorious in the third flight, firing 334 to garner low gross. Low net went to Dick Budde and Ken Cage who combined for 252.3.

* $9 MILLION MAN: When David Duval won the Bell South Classic a couple weeks ago, he became the 11th player in PGA Tour history to surpass $9 million in career earnings. Duval has won (as of April 23) $9,129,541 since joining the Tour in 1995.

His season's earnings so far this year, $2,723,500, already has surpassed his tour-record $2,591,031 established last year.
