Department of Motor Vehicles adds night shift to help with mail

"Our goal is a five-day turnaround in processing vehicle registrations," said Kim Evans, DMV spokeswoman.

"As of (Friday) we're processing mail-in registrations from July 14 and 15 - about a 15-day turnaround."

The DMV briefly reached the five-day goal in May by processing backlogged registration renewals on Saturdays and evenings. But the gap grew again because of just seven employees handling a growing number of mail-in renewals.

The new budget in July brought more help, but some drivers still find their registrations have expired before they get the new documents.

"I mailed my registration in on July 7 and I still haven't gotten it back (on Friday)," said June Primmer of Reno. "I keep the renewal receipt in the vehicle just in case we get stopped for an expired registration."

Evans said Primmer's renewal was processed Monday and was probably mailed Tuesday or Wednesday.
