Man drowns

Firefighters pulled the unidentified man from 9 feet of water in Lorenzi Park pond Friday afternoon.

A witness told authorities the man walked into the shallow eastern end of the pond with a can of beer in one hand and began to splash water on himself. He walked farther into the pond and began to struggle, fire officials said.

The city said it was the first drowning in a municipal pool or pond.
