Man sentenced to 15 years for his role in death of Blitzstein

Alfred Mauriello, 71, pleaded guilty in April to one count of participating in an enterprise engaged in racketeering activity, including Blitzstein's slaying. He was the first of four men to be sentenced in connection with the shooting death.

As part of his plea agreement with prosecutors, Mauriello admitted receiving $10,000 from another mob associate, Peter Caruso, to kill the 63-year-old victim, also a mob associate. He also admitted paying Antone Davi and Richard Friedman between $3,000 and $4,000 to carry out the crime for him.

Blitzstein, a longtime friend and business partner of mob enforcer Anthony Spilotro, was found slumped over a chair on Jan. 7, 1997, in the living room of his home.

Caruso, 59, died in prison in January while awaiting trial.

In sentencing Mauriello Friday, U.S. District Judge Philip Pro said Mauriello deserves credit for his cooperation but deserves no leniency based on his age and declining health.
