Commissioners reject request to fund survey

Commissioners last week nixed a request by the Open Space and Agricultural Lands Protection panel for $10,000 to pay for a survey of Carson Valley residents on the issue.

At the same time, commissioners directed County Manager Don Holler to work with the group and come back with more specific recommendations for saving the land.

The survey would have asked residents if saving open space is a priority and if they'd be willing to be taxed for it.

The action left some wondering if commissioners are dedicated to the effort.

"I just don't feel like (commissioners) are committed to helping us move forward," said Ame Hellman of the American Land Conservancy.

"Douglas County is going to have to realize it's not the responsibility of everyone else. It's ultimately our own responsibility."
