Superintendent defends retreat at Lake Tahoe

Twenty-six businesses, some with ties to the school district, chipped in $19,500 to put on the $65,500 leadership retreat over the weekend at the Horizon Hotel Casino.

"I've always done retreats like this," Hager said. "My experience is sometimes you stay in town and sometimes you need to go out of the district."

The business donations allowed 175 administrators and principals to go on an M.S. Dixie dinner cruise Sunday night for $38 each.

Academic programs by two contributors, Voyager and NovaNet Learning Inc., have been used in county schools for more than a year.

Earlier this summer, district trustees approved a contract with another contributor, the Sierra Pacific Power Co. subsidiary e-three, to improve energy efficiency at school buildings.

Other contributors included Wells Fargo Bank, which donated $5,000, and Swire Coca-Cola, which gave $3,000 plus door prizes.
