United Way names new officers

The United Way of Southern Nevada has a new slate of officers and 10 new board members -- among them for the first time, two students.
Cathy Jones, senior vice president of finance at Nevada Title Co., was elected new board chairwoman at the annual meeting July 20. She has been active in United Way for 13 years and replaces Mike Maffie of Southwest Gas Corp. in the position.
"My focus over the next two years will be to continue United Way's mission of building a better, more caring community and to reach our campaign goals for the new millennium," she said.
Students Celeste Lero, a senior at Las Vegas Academy, and Jeff Walker, a senior at Green Valley High School, were among 10 new members elected to the charitable group's board. They join 47 continuing board members.
Other officers elected for 1999-2000 were Laura Schulte of Wells Fargo Bank, senior vice chairwoman; Steve Comer of Arthur Andersen, Bill Hornbuckle of MGM Grand, Don Snyder of Boyd Gaming Corp., and Greg Taylor of Mastec, vice chairmen; Mike Niggli of Nevada Power Co., Campaign 2000 chairman; John O'Reilly of Keefer, O'Reilly & Ferrario, secretary; and Dale Affonso of KPMG Peat Marwick, treasurer. Niggli and Schulte were also elected to the board of directors.
Other new members joining United Way of Southern Nevada's board: Jill Campbell of Cox Communications, attorney Don Chairez, Lindy Mandekic of Deloitte and Touche, Tom Mangione of Nevada Community Bancorp, John Stillings of Nevada State Bank and D. Taylor of the Culinary Union.
