LV Academy sets placement tests Friday

The Las Vegas Academy, the Clark County School District's magnet school for performing and visual arts and international studies, will be holding final auditions to fill a limited number of positions for fall at 1 p.m. Friday at the academy, 315 S. Seventh St.

Students may audition for dance, drama, technical theater, band, orchestra, vocal music or visual arts.

Students interested in French, Spanish, German or Japanese in the international studies program will take a brief placement test. Students must have a 2.0 GPA and must prepare audition materials. Call 799-7800, Ext. 219.

Fair planned at two area malls

The 11th annual Back to School Fair will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Boulevard mall and Aug. 21-22 at the Meadows mall.

Clark County School District staff will be available to answer questions regarding zoning, registration requirements, busing, new construction, and special programs.

More than 30 other participants, such as the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Las Vegas Parks and Recreation and Clark County Parks and Recreation, will offer information on after-school and school break activities for children and families.

The Clark County Health District will provide free immunizations. Parents must bring a copy of their child's shot record. The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will provide library cards, United Blood Services will take blood donations and the Salvation Army will hold a new clothing drive for students in need.

The fair at the Boulevard runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. At the Meadows, it's 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 22. Call 799-5312.

Buffett tribute band to perform in Henderson

The Black Mountain Aquatic Complex is hosting the Jimmy Buffett tribute band Conched Out 7 p.m. Saturday at 599 Greenway Road.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for youth 17 and under and seniors 55 or more. The concert is sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Call 565-2367.

Jewish Federation schedules two meetings

The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas will hold two Jewish community Town Hall meetings this month.

The first will be 6:30-8 p.m. Monday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. The second, 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Admission is free. Call 732-0556.

Mountain lions will be subject of Saturday hike

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Some coming programs:

Mountain Lions and Bighorn: A 3-mile circular hike Saturday behind White Rock Hill will observe the behavior, problems and interrelationship of the native animals.

La Madre Spring Riparian Area: A 4-mile moderately strenuous hike Sunday to discover the types of life that water brings to the desert and explore a beautiful riparian area around La Madre Springs. Wear a hat, bring water and a snack.

New business workshop

The Service Corps of Retired Executives will present its next "Starting A New Business" workshop 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the New Business Information Center, 1951 N. Stella Lake Drive. Cost $30 if prepaid, $35 at the door. Call 388-6104.
