Fishing reports -- Las Vegas area -- Aug. 12, 1999

LAKE MEAD -- There has been little change in the fishing during the past week with anglers catching striped bass and largemouth bass in deep water while channel catfish and bluegull are being found in coves. Boaters who are trolling with downriggers are connecting with striped bass at depths of 50 to 75 feet. The better action has been taking place from Pyramid Island to the Hemenway Wall. Anglers fishing in the Overton Arm are still finding stripers around Fish Island and coves north of Stewart's Point. Largemouth bass are being found holding in deep water alaong cliff walls. Good success is still taking place in coves for channel catfish and bluegill.

LAKE MOHAVE -- Striped bass fishing has been good for trollers who are catching fish that measure from 14 to 17 inches in Nevada Bay across from Owl's Point. Smaller stripers are being taken by trolling and drifting with anchovies in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove. Large stripers have been seen on the lake's surface near Willow Beach, but there has been little angler success for the fish in that area. Trout fishing has been good at Willow Beach due to recent plants by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

EAGLE LAKE RESERVOIR -- Fishing has apparently entered the summer doldrums as angler success for rainbow trout has dropped off during the past week. Weed growth in the lake has also become a problem for shore anglers and boaters, particularly around the boat ramp and fishing dock. Casting flies from boats or float tubes may be the ticket for catching trout as anglers are unable to escape the weeds.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Eight anglers who were checked Saturday by the Nevada Division of Wildlife had just four rainbow trout and no largemouth bass or crappie. The lake's water level is low and aquatic weeds are becoming a problem.

WAYNE E. KIRCHER WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Fishing has been very slow for rainbow trout while bass fishing has been fair around sunset at Adams-McGill and Haymeadow reservoirs. Spinner baits cast near brush are the best bet for catching bass.
