Flood victims receive first funds from SBA

Sen. Richard Bryan and Rep. Shelley Berkley, both D-Nev., Wednesday presented the first $153,100 in federal disaster loan checks to 10 flood victims to help repair damages caused by July storms in Las Vegas.

The checks were the first assistance from the Small Business Administration, which aids nonfarm, private sector disaster losses.

To date, the SBA has approved 42 low-interest disaster loans totaling $1.4 million to owners whose property was damaged by the floods July 8-16, SBA District Director John Scott said. The average time for loan approval was four days.

The administration also aided Reno-Sparks residents in 1997 flooding with $24.6 million in disaster loans.

SBA representatives are available at the Executive Center, 1455 E. Tropicana Ave., Suite 650, to assist individuals and businesses. The operating hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
