Car jacking leads to murder charges

Metro Police have charged a man with two counts of murder in connection with a car jacking that ended in an accident that killed two people Friday night.

Randy Goodrick, 19, also faces charges of attempted kidnap with a weapon, home invasion and robbery. Police say he and Michael Butler, 20, stole a man's BMW as he was parking it in the driveway at his Summerlin home.

Police also are searching for a woman they believed dropped the two men off in the gated community near Alta and Town Center drives. She could be charged as an accessory to the crimes, Sgt. Kevin Manning said.

Police believe that at about 9:15 p.m. Goodrick and Butler approached the victim in the driveway of his home, Manning said.

"They had one gun between them, and the victim struggled with them," Manning said. "We believe he wrestled the gun away from Goodrick. The victim fired one shot and hit Goodrick in the leg after he got in the passenger side of the BMW."

From there the two men fled in the BMW eventually making it to Charleston Boulevard and heading east.

At the intersection of Charleston and Hualapai Way the BMW, driven by Butler, ran a red light and hit a motorcycle traveling north on Hualapai.

Phillip D. Gastineau, 41, was driving the motorcycle and died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident. Butler also was pronounced dead at the scene after the BMW struck a light pole.

"The two charges of murder stem from the logical progression of the illegal events," Manning said. "If they hadn't stolen the car, the accident that led to the two deaths wouldn't have happened."
