DSL Internet service begins Sept. 1

Sprint has announced plans to introduce high-speed Internet access in Las Vegas on Sept. 1.

The new service, called digital subscriber line (DSL), offers connections up to 50 times faster than a 28.8-kilobit dial-up modem. The service operates over existing telephone lines, does not require the customer to "dial-in" to their Internet service provider, and doesn't tie up the phone line while in use.

Sprint said the service will be offered to businesses and residential customers, with prices starting at $45 a month, a price that includes Internet access fees. Installation is $130, while the equipment charge of $199 is waived if the customer commits to 12 months of service.

DSL will be the second high-speed Internet access service offered in Las Vegas. Cox Communications already offers cable modem access at a starting rate of $50, although that charge is reduced to $40 for extended basic cable customers. The cable modem costs $160 to install. It offers a download speed of 512 kilobits, about 18 times faster than a 28.8 dial-up modem. Charges include the equipment and an Internet account.
