Patrolman fired shot at wanted man who ran from I-80

RENO, Nev. - A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper fired a shot at a wanted man who made a threatening move when he was stopped on Interstate 80 west of Reno.

The fleeing suspect, Danny Myers, 34, Reno, was not hit by the shot and eventually was apprehended Monday night without further incident, a patrol spokesman said Tuesday.

The patrolman, a 15-year veteran of the force, temporarily has been placed on administrative leave with pay. His name has not been released.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office and Nevada Division of Investigation are reviewing the incident as they do with all firearm discharges at the state patrol, patrol spokesman Tony Almaraz said Tuesday.

The trooper stopped a car Monday night for a traffic violation on I-80 near Mogul, Almaraz said. A passenger he recognized as a wanted man - Myers - jumped out of the car and started running.

Myers had attempted to flee from authorities twice and was arrested twice in the last eight days. But each time he posted bond and was released.

This time he ran across the interstate into a brushy area. The trooper ordered him to halt several times, but Myers instead made a threatening move and the trooper fired a single shot, Almaraz said.

Authorities have not found any gun or other weapon at the scene but an investigation is continuing, he said.

So far, Myers has been charged with failure to obey a police officer and being under the influence of a controlled substance. There was no information immediately available on the charge in his original arrest warrant.
