Moonlight hikes planned this week

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes and walks with reservations. Call 363-1921. Two coming programs:

Moonlight Hike: A 1 1/2-mile ramble Wednesday and Saturday to watch bats drink at a spring and listen for other desert wildlife such as red spotted toads.

Moon Walk: An easy moonlight hike Thursday to discover and discuss the mysteries of facts and myths of the moon.

Support group formed for families, friends

Community Counseling Center has formed a hepatitis C support group for those infected or affected by the disease.

The support group will meet at 7 p.m. on Mondays at 1120 Almond Tree Lane. Families, spouses and friends are welcomed. Call 369-8700.

Free diet seminar

Dog tricks class

Women in construction help local students

The Las Vegas Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction announced three additional scholarships were awarded for the fall semester.

Continuing their scholarships are Ajeet Pai, graduate of Clark High School and currently attending Rice University; Kristin Stangeland, graduate of Green Valley High School and University of Arizona, currently attending University of Arizona Law School; Janel Campbell, graduate of Bishop Gorman High School, currently attending University of Nevada, Reno; and Ofelia Avila, graduate of Eldorado High School, currently attending UNLV.

New recipients are Julie Tieman, currently enrolled at UNLV, studying linguistics, due to graduate in June 2000; Morgana Martin, a 1999 graduate of Green Valley High School, who will be studying music and chemical engineering; and Christian Ramey, a 1999 graduate of Advanced Technologies Academy, who will be studying computer science at Community College of Southern Nevada.

Southern Nevada students excel at Oregon university

More than 1,250 University of Oregon students have been named to the deans' lists for scholastic achievement during spring term of the 1998-99 school year, according to Stephanie Caranahan, acting dean of student life.

Among them: Jens Michael Pfeffer of Boulder City, a junior computer and information science major; Christopher Paul Frey of Henderson, a freshman undeclared major; and Tiffany Marie Lybbert of Las Vegas, a senior educational studies major.

Local Emergency Planning Committee appointment

Linda Alonzo, safety and environmental management coordinator for Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, was recently appointed to the Local Emergency Planning Committee which reviewed federal relief allocated to Clark County for flood damage recovery.

Government education program

Girls Nation senator Jody Hangawatte, a student at Green Valley High School, was named as assistant to the president for public liaison at the American Legion Auxiliary's 53rd annual session of Girls Nation, a government education program for outstanding teenage girls.

Academic honors

Vikrant Rachakonda on Las Vegas, son of Drs. Prabhu and Lata Rachakonda, was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Johns Hopkins University. Rachakonda will graduate in May 2002.
