Disney to honor Boulder City teacher

An orchestra teacher from Boulder City is among 39 educators to be honored by the Walt Disney Co. during its annual American Teacher Awards.

Adam J. Schultheis, who teaches orchestra at Garrett Middle School in Boulder City, is one of three middle school arts teachers who will be recognized at a ceremony Nov. 14 in Los Angeles to be televised on the cable Disney Channel on Nov. 15.

Carson City Middle School English teacher Jessica Barlow Daniels was selected for the humanities.

Disney's Outstanding Teacher of the Year will be selected from among the 39 teachers and announced during the ceremony.

The Outstanding Teacher will receive $25,000, the top teacher's school will receive $25,000 and the teacher's school district will receive $10,000. All 39 honorees and their schools will each receive $2,500. The 12 category finalists will receive an additional $2,500.

All the outstanding teacher finalists and their principals will attend a summer institute to learn how to share their techniques and will develop a professional development action plan for the 2000-2001 school year.

The teachers, representing all regions of the country, were selected from a record 11,000 applications, which resulted from more than 75,000 nominations by students, parents, educators and community members across the United States.
