Veterans cemetery gets $2 million in grants

The Department of Veterans Affairs is awarding two grants totaling more than $2 million to the state of Nevada for projects at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.

The first grant in the amount of $472,734 is for costs associated with construction of a chapel building with an attached porch, Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., said.

The second grant of $1.6 million is for expansion costs to improve the cemetery with 5,625 new burial sites, including 3,782 pre-placed liners or crypts.

"We all owe a great debt to our country's veterans, and this funding is something we desperately need in Southern Nevada," Gibbons said.

Gov. Kenny Guinn and state officials submitted a formal request for federal assistance on Aug. 9.

"I think we have a solemn duty to remember the sacrifices our veterans have made to our state and our country," Guinn said. "These grants go a long way toward that goal."
