LV a top entrepreneurial hot spot

A Cognetics Inc.'s survey ranked Las Vegas No. 1 among the nation's entrepreneurial hot spots in small metro areas.

Trailing Las Vegas in the category were Sioux Falls, S.D., Austin, Texas, Savannah, Ga., and Jacksonville, Fla.

Among states, Nevada ranked No. 2, trailing only Utah. Nevada was followed by Arizona, Georgia and Colorado.

The survey scores are determined by the proportionate number of businesses created in the past 10 years that still exist and employ five people or more. Cognetics generally attributes this growth to five factors: universities, a skilled labor pool, airports, quality of life and "positive entrepreneurial climate." The survey covers 1993 to 1998.

Phoenix was the nation's hottest spot for entrepreneurs among large metro areas, followed by Salt Lake City, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Atlanta and Indianapolis.
