UNLV nets new coach

Kevin Cory has been named the new head coach of the UNLV women's tennis team. He replaces Douglas Geiwald, who was originally named to take the job on June 1, but was unable to obtain the needed visa from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. Geiwald, a native of Sweden, took over the on-court coaching duties on an interim basis last spring after six-year head coach Ola Malmqvist left the school in December.

Cory comes to Las Vegas from the University of Mississippi where he was assistant coach since 1996. Cory helped the Ole Miss ladies earn a place among the national powers of college tennis, including the school's most successful season in history this spring with a 24-5 record.

* Jim Preus of Las Vegas led the Spanish Oak Aces to a 36-19 victory over 4Play from Cerritos, Calif., at the DuPont World Team Tennis West Regional Championships last weekend in San Diego.

* Fernando Meligeni of Brazil upset third-seeded Carlos Moya 6-7 (7-1), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in the opening round of the Hamlet Cup at Commack, N.Y. It was Meligeni's fifth victory of the year over a top 10 player.

* Seventh-seeded Jim Courier lost to 60th-ranked Sargis Sargsian 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of the U.S. Pro-Tennis Championships at Brookline, Mass.
