PUC staff, Bell affiliate sign settlement

A settlement that would approve SBC Communications Inc.'s acquisition of Ameritech Corp. has been signed by SBC and the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada's staff.

If authorized by the commission, the agreement would remove another roadblock to the $57 billion merger that would form the nation's largest telephone company.

Nevada Bell, which provides local phone service in most areas outside Clark County and wireless service statewide, is an affiliate of SBC.
