Letter: Dickel proves Bayno right

I was very disappointed when I read Dean Juipe's column following UNLV's win over Wyoming. I thought by now the point guard controversy had been put to rest, that Mark Dickel had been firmly entrenched in the starting spot that has rightfully been his for the past two and a half seasons.

The comment that Greedy Daniels "was projected to be the team's starting point guard by now" is simply not accurate. Greedy was never projected as the starting point guard by anyone, except misguided fans and members of the media eager to stir up controversy where clearly none should exist.

It is unfair to Dickel to state that Greedy "has far greater potential than Dickel." This is certainly not a statement that can be supported by comparing how the two have played so far this season.

Greedy is not and has never been a true point guard. His style of play is simply too uncontrolled, selfish and undisciplined. As a result, Greedy has nearly 60 turnovers this season, 20 more than Dickel, even though Greedy has played less than half as many minutes as Dickel. I won't even bother to compare Dickel's number of assists to Daniels'.

Dickel has proven his ability and his effectiveness on the court, leading the team not only to its first WAC tournament championship last season but also its first NCAA tournament appearance in seven years.

And if that is not evidence enough that Dickel has earned the starting job, I think one only needs to look at the team's record of nine wins in its last 10 games to see that coach Bill Bayno has finally made the right choice at the point.
