Letter: Different slant to Sands story

Sheldon Adelson, through his many presidents and managing teams, promised his employees a great future. When rumors started circulating about a possible closure, the beverage department was called into a meeting with the vice president of Food and Beverage, Phil Barnett.

Barnett told us about plans to build a new hotel. He told us an all-suite hotel would be built on part of the property. When this was completed, all employees would move over to the new structure and the old structure would be imploded. The second new structure would be built and the two structures would be connected by a shopping mall. We were told not to worry about out jobs.

Now, Mr. Weidner, you claim we were only given six weeks notice so that we "had the opportunity" to apply at the yet to open Monte Carlo. The fact is that most Monte Carlo employees were already hired. Few Sands employees were given jobs at the Monte Carlo.

Mr. Weidner, please tell us which Sands employees closed the Sands and opened up the Monte Carlo. Most of the Sands employees would have been very happy to have a long-term notice to seek jobs.

You talk about Adelson's generous severance pay. The employees were told that should they leave the Sands prior to its closure to begin another job, they would not receive any severance pay.

Adelson made a lot of promises to the Sands workers, and I feel that they should be given first choice whether they want to go back to the new property.
