UNLV softball team launches season against Southern Utah

The 1999 edition of the UNLV softball team enters its regular season Saturday as it hosts Southern Utah in a doubleheader beginning as noon Rebel Diamond.

The Lady Rebels are coming off a disappointing 1998 season in which they finished with a 21-30 overall record and sixth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference.

Leading UNLV's 12 returning letter-winners are infielders Raven Coberg and shortstop Racheal Goodpaster and outfielders Amy Alves and Keao Chang.

Coberg hit .363 in conference games last year, Goodpaster started every game at short while hitting .293, Alves led the team in stolen bases and Chang hit .275 and was fifth on the team with a .340 slugging percentage.

Shan McDonald is entering her 13th season as the Lady Rebels' coach. She has a career record of 397-294-2 and led UNLV to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last nine years.
