American Airlines cancels flights because of pilot shortage

In a recorded statement, American spokesman Tim Smith said airline officials are "very disappointed in this situation and regret the inconvenience it caused for our customers."

The pilots say AMR Corp., the parent of American, has disregarded a contract since purchasing Reno Air six weeks ago for $124 million. The pilots say American must pay lower-paid Reno pilots at American Airlines' rates.

On Friday, the two sides failed to reach an agreement on the matter.

Although federal law bars a strike, pilots can refuse to volunteer for overtime, which can lead to cancellation or delay of flights.

The pilot union did not call for the action, but the airline said many pilots were unexpectedly absent. Allied Pilots Association president Rich LaVoy had said the union board will continue to work through the weekend to reach an agreement.
