Convicted killer gets massage license

A woman whose past includes a murder conviction and multiple arrests for prostitution was granted a conditional two-year license Monday to operate an independent massage therapy business.

Metro Police officials told the Las Vegas City Council that Kathy Pearson Woods failed to mention most of her arrests when applying for a work card for her business, Relax that Body.

Woods did disclose a 1975 arrest, conviction and a prison sentence on a homicide charge in New York state. She failed, however, to list other New York state arrests prior to her murder conviction, including 26 from 1970 to 1974 on prostitution charges, two on larceny charges, one on a weapons charge and one on charges of resisting arrest and escape.

"That was when I was a juvenile and everybody makes mistakes when they're a juvenile," Woods said.

Mayor Jan Laverty Jones said she believes some type of legislation is required to keep decades-old records from standing in the way of people trying to turn their lives around.

The council granted Woods a two-year license to operate Relax That Body at 6436 Plumcrest Road on the condition that Woods notify the city's business licensing department within 48 hours of any subsequent arrest.
