Council approves more cops, less booze, during Hot August Nights

The Reno City Council on Tuesday approved adding about $100,000 to the police department's budget to cover the cost of putting 75 more officers on the streets during the annual tribute to classic cars.

Council members also approved restrictions on alcohol sales.

Last year, rioting broke out in downtown Reno after the officials events had ended.

Besides the beefed up police presence, this year's event will begin a day earlier and end on Saturday in a move officials hope will discourage out of town gang members from coming to Reno.

Authorities blamed juvenile gang members from California for last year's problems.
