Letter: City's appreciation of culture will arrive slowly

You are to be commended for your stand. Creativity is by its nature alternative thinking and not often compliant to the most conservative thought. That is why not one significant work of art was created under the Nazi regime.

As Las Vegas grows with people from big cities across the country, the new immigrants are finding UNLV is a cultural oasis in the Southwestern wasteland.

Stuffy reviewers may say that our concert audiences lack sophistication when they applaud at inappropriate times, but maybe these people are just thirsting so much for well-played music that they didn't care if their applause blew the focus of the musicians.

Saturday night my wife and I attended a performance of La Boheme at the Artemus Ham Concert Hall. It was a wonderful experience.

Those stuffy reviewers might say that Mimi was even too restrained in the first act and should have sung louder; but as three-year residents of Las Vegas, we were happy that at least Musetta was dressed in more than just a thong.

Las Vegas is no longer just a place where gun-totin' cowboys go to gambling joints, and UNLV is helping us grow into something better. I hope the readers will take advantage of what is offered there.

It will enrich their lives.
