Marathoner shot himselfIt turns out South African Willie Mtolo didn't pull out of the Las Vegas International Marathon with a hamstring injury after all.
The 1992 New York City Marathon winner shot himself in the left ankle while patrolling his ranch for cattle rustlers, forcing him to withdraw from Sunday's LVIM.
The LVIM was to mark a major step in Mtolo's comeback. LVIM director Al Boka was so confident Mtolo could run the race under 2 hours, 10 minutes he advanced Mtolo and his trainer $1,500 roundtrip airfare from Capetown to Las Vegas. The LVIM record is 2:13:37, set by Las Vegan Frank Plasso in 1986.
