Letter: A told-you-so aimed at Nevada's boxing commission

As president of Southern Nevada chapter of the National Organization for Women and representing thousands of women and men across the country who argued against Tyson's relicensing, I was denied the opportunity to speak until there was no one left in the room to hear my words.

The NSAC was determined to follow questionable medical evidence and ignored Tyson's own testimony as well as his words quoted in an interview that had been printed in a prominent national magazine.

Now a courageous Maryland court has ordered that Tyson be sent to prison for a year. For that brief span of time, ordinary people will be safe from casual encounters with Tyson that can only end in assault and battery. We have Tyson's own lack of self-control to thank for that.

The Southern Nevada chapter of NOW struggled for four years trying to persuade the NSAC to see the error of its ways, but to no avail. For whatever reason, its members ignored good sense and returned this man to the boxing ring.

Decent people all across our country were bitterly disappointed. I knew that it was only a matter of time until Tyson destroyed his own career, so I waited until the Maryland case was resolved. NOW has been vindicated, and the commission is again the laughingstock of our country.

Don't worry about Mike Tyson, though, I'm sure the NSAC members are already preparing their explanations for giving him another license when he gets out of prison this time.
