Sweet news for Valentine's Day brides

Clark County Clerk Shirley Parraguirre, in announcing that she would increase the number of windows at the Marriage License Bureau for the Valentine's Day weekend, made a joke that is going to result in a sweeter wedding day for many.

In a story that ran in Monday's Sun, Parraguirre said the county will spend about $3,000 more in overtime to open the additional clerk windows and use more county staff to go through the long lines and help people fill out the applications.

"Compared to how this will help the local economy," Parraguirre said, "the money we are spending is a drop in the bucket."

Then she mused: "If I could, I'd offer the people standing in line free coffee and doughnuts. But I'm not going to ask the county to pay for that."

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts said it would be glad to serve special heart-shaped doughnuts and coffee to some of the more than 3,100 people standing in line during the Valentine's/President's Day weekend.

The Krispy Kreme promotion will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Marriage License Bureau 200 S. 3rd St.

Lincoln Spoor, owner of the company, said 50 dozen doughnuts will be especially made for the event. The doughnuts will feature red, pink and white sprinkles and feature the company's 62-year-old original glazed recipe.

Krispy Kreme opened its first Las Vegas store last March on West Spring Mountain Road and its second location inside the Texas Station on Tuesday.

A record 3,099 marriage licenses were issued over a three-day period last year over the Valentine's Day weekend and the waits were as long as five hours. Parraguirre hopes that by opening additional clerk windows it will cut the wait in half.

This year, she said, the bureau is projecting 3,169 licenses at $35 apiece will be issued from today through Valentine's Day on Sunday.
