UNLV golfers off to slow start in Hawaiian tourney

The fourth-ranked UNLV golf team shot an opening-round 10-over par 290 Thursday and was tied for ninth place at the 23-team Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,566-yard Waikoloa Beach Golf Club in Hawaii.

Georgia Tech led the team standings by nine shots after shooting a 10-under 270. Arizona State and UCLA were tied for second at 279, while Arkansas was fourth at 281. Pepperdine and Washington were tied for fifth at 284. UNLV was tied with UNR after the first 18 holes of play.

UNLV junior Jeremy Anderson shot a one-under-par 69 to lead UNLV and was tied for eighth place. Georgia Tech's Carlton Forrester shot a 64 and paced the tournament. Forrester's teammate, Bryce Molder, was second place after firing a 65.

Other Rebels competing were senior Charley Hoffman, tied for 19th at 71; junior Michael Kirk, tied for 28th at 72; and sophomore Scott Lander and freshman Adam Scott, tied for 87th at 78.

The tournament continued today and will conclude Saturday.
