Coroner releases name of weekend shooting victim

The Clark County Coroner's office today identified a 43-year-old Las Vegas man shot to death by police over the weekend as Frank Leavitt.

Investigators said police responding to a domestic dispute shot Leavitt after he aimed a pistol at them.

Metro Police Capt. Greg Jolley said the two officers involved in the Saturday afternoon shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The names of the officers have not been released.

Jolley said three patrol officers were sent to a residence in the 6600 block of Delphinium Avenue in northwest Las Vegas after dispatchers received a call about 12:15 p.m. of a fight between a man and woman.

The unidentified caller reportedly was calling at the request of the 15-year-old daughter of the woman involved in the fight.

Police were told there was a gun in the residence where the fighting was taking place and that the man involved in the fight had used it on prior occasions, shooting into the ceiling.

Jolley said the officers entered the residence and found the suspect in a bedroom with a gun in his hand, at times putting the gun to his own head.

He said the officers tried to talk the man into putting down the gun, but the suspect instead pointed it at them.

At that point, two of the officers fired their weapons at Leavitt.

Leavitt was pronounced dead at the scene.
