Vega, Mahan named to District Court

CARSON CITY -- Gov. Kenny Guinn today named Las Vegas Municipal Judge Valorie J. Vega and James C. Mahan, an attorney in private practice, to the District Court in Clark County.

Vega, the first Hispanic female ever to become a district judge, replaces Nancy Becker, who was elected to the Nevada Supreme Court.

Mahan, 55, succeeds District Judge Myron Leavitt, who was also elected to the Nevada Supreme Court.

Vega, 43, has been a municipal judge since 1989. She worked for the Clark County District Attorney's Office, where she started the child abuse and sexual assault unit. And she had experience in civil litigation.

Mahan has specialized in civil law.

There were 16 applicants to succeed Becker.
