Assemblyman offers apology, says no racial slur intended

CARSON CITY -- Assemblyman John Marvel, R-Battle Mountain, back at work after two weeks in the hospital with pneumonia, made a public apology Tuesday for using the word "wetback" and said it was not his intention to hurt anybody's feelings.

"I apologize to anybody I may have slurred," the 72-year-old Marvel said on the Assembly floor, where he received a standing ovation when he walked back into the chambers. He said he was "raised a gentleman" and he meant no disrespect.

Hispanic groups have criticized Marvel and some have suggested he resign.

Marvel thanked all the Assembly members "from the bottom of my heart" for their support.
